I became interested in this product because I have four indoor cats, and I worry about their eating habits since they don’t play as much as they did when they were kittens. One cat was becoming increasingly overweight – the veterinarian said it was time for an intervention before his weight started negatively affecting his health. My other cat ate his food so quickly (even though it was left out all day) that he choked and threw it back up un-chewed. The other two cats just seemed bored. I was unable to transition to “feeding times” as opposed to ad libidem feeding because all the cats would yowl and yowl until I provided food, and my roommates threatened to move out if I couldn’t shut the cats up. I thought this product would solve all of those issues, and it absolutely has.
I recognize that this product is described as a treat maze, but I have chosen to use it as my cat’s main food bowl. I initially provided both the maze all day and a secondary traditional food bowl in the evening, but have since done away with the traditional food bowl all together because the maze is so successful.
Good Points: – The overweight cat is steadily losing weight because he can’t eat as easily as he used to. The product does slow consumption rate dramatically. I am noticing myself using less food to feed them all, and that correlates to lower food consumption all around. It also saves me some money because I’m not running through a bag of cat food every week. – The cat who eats too fast and chokes can no longer do that. He has to work for each piece of food, and that has slowed his eating sufficiently to inhibit choking. – All four cats, who had been acting very lazy and bored, have become re-invigorated and I see them hunting and prowling around the house more often now that they are mentally stimulated. They have more interest in toys, and I see them exploring more often.
Design Flaws (which I expected prior to purchasing): – The feeder is small, and it is not in any way weighted to inhibit it from being knocked over. I never even attempted to set it up in its factory-designed state because I knew it would be on its side in 3.532 seconds. – To mitigate this design deficiency, I mounted it, with some nylon nuts and bolts, to a very nice, smooth, white lacquered 2′ x 2′ piece of 1/4″ thick birch plywood, which I placed on little no-skid feet. This involved drilling four small holes through the bottom of the feeder, but since I chose white nylon nuts, you cannot see the mounts from a distance, and they are remarkably sturdy. – The board is big enough that the cats have to stand on it to eat out of the feeder, and therefore, simple physics inhibits them from being able to knock over the feeder-base unit upon which they are standing. Furthermore, the clean white lacquered base I designed is easy to clean with a damp cloth or a light detergent, which is much easier than dragging out a broom and mop to clean the whole floor. – Additionally, I mounted a small lip around the edge of the base so the food, when it does fall and scatter, doesn’t go everywhere. It is contained by the lip at the edge of the board. – Lastly, before mounting the cat feeder to the base, I filled the underside of the feeder with polyurethane foam. This greatly reduced the noise of the food colliding with the feeder as it fell. – After a few days observing the cats, I realized they had learned how to eat out of the hole in the top of the feeder, so I closed that in with a light piece of corrugated plastic, cut into a circle to fit snugly in the top, but that is removable as to allow a human to open it to place more food in the feeder.
Aside from the designers grossly underestimating the ability of cats to knock things over and break things, I feel this is a really wonderful product without any flaws that cannot be mitigated by some simple do-it-yourself fixes. The cats had no issues figuring out how to use the feeder, although they all seem to access their food using different and ever-changing methods. It has really helped my cats’ health improve, and I would credit this feeder with possibly adding years on to their lives due to the improved nutrition and eating behaviors it promotes.
The only down-side is that, despite the foam I installed to reduce the sound, it is really loud when the food falls. I got around this annoyance by placing it in a separate room that people don’t typically frequent, but it would drive me crazy if I had to listen to it, lets say, in my bedroom every night.

The first one arrived broken but thats because it was shipped in just the box its in, not in a shipping box with bubble wrap. It didnt have a chance to arrive in 1 piece. I sent it back, complained and the 2nd arrived in a shipping box with bubble wrap and it was unbroken. It assembled easy but I will say that I have 2 rowdy, playful 6 month old kittens & they are rough on everything so after they knocked it over 4 times (spilling treats everywhere…which was probably their intention anyway) I MacGyver-ed the heck out of it. I found a vitamin bottle that fit into the hollow underneath it & I filled that with sand.I put it in the hollow and duct taped it in. Now it has weight to it & they can’t just knock it over.I then attached the rubber mat, with duct tape,to the underside to keep it all together & give it a firmer base. It worked perfectly so with a few simple, cheap adjustments (that can’t be seen) you have a fun toy that keeps your cats entertained & gives them a sense of hunting/foraging for food that they hardly get as indoor cats.
We have 2 kittens that we not so free feed. By that I mean we use mazes and cat toys to put kibble in and let them have free reign as to how much they want to eat. This is a great addition to their toys! (We also have a kibble ball, kibble popper, and kibble maze which we alternate between) We started them with the “easy” setting and now have it on hard. We put 1/4 cup of kibble in it twice a day and they go to it any time they feel a bit hungry. It takes them, about 30 seconds to get 1 piece of kibble out so it really helps not having them scarf down kibble every time they do feel hungry. Would highly recommend it!

This is a good idea, but my cat seems to think this is just a new way for me to store her food til she needs it. She doesn’t put her paw in to knock the food off the ledges like you’d expect a normal intelligent cat to do. Instead she waits for me to knock the food down so she can eat it from the bowl section at the bottom. So basically it does work almost as intended, except I’M the one getting more exercise, not the cat.
If I had a cat with half a brain cell, I’d imagine this is a great way to feed them. It’s decent quality and easy to put together and dismantle for cleaning. I’m not withholding stars just because my cat is a lazy imbecile.

Into Day 1 with the Catit Senses food maze.Our cat “Grace” could never be described as lazy, but I must admit that she is not overly bright either.This combination, enhanced by our desire to keep her happy has resulted in a slightly tubby (not tabby) cat.We read the excellent DAVIDE review and we have purchased one of these items.
It is early days, but Grace has the manual dexterity to move things around in her dirt box and provided she washes her paws, I hope that she will grasp the concept of the Food Maze.So far she has eaten from the tray at the bottom and hissed at it.We are hoping that eventually she will reach inside the maze through one of the various apertures at three levels and start to hook the food out.
I must admit that for the price, I think that this item represents good value and hopefully Grace will soon be hooking out dried cat food into the tray, or at worse onto the surrounding and attached mat.It certainly seems well constructed and I am confident that given a few days of starvation, either she or we will give in.So why four stars and not 3 or 5?Basically I feel that this item will be devil to keep clean and will need disassembly and reassembly every day so 4 it is.

Day 2
Grace has spent a tortured day investigating the imposter in her house in the form of the food maze.Both my wife and I have shared with Grace our interpretation of how a cat should interact with this toy. Grace has stared at me like I am an idiot and tried to swipe the food from my wife’s finger; claws out!We have not fed Grace today, except to place her ration in the maze and left her and the cleaner to get on with it.I fear that we might be seeking a new cleaner shortly, either because she has resigned or less likely, but possible, that she has been devoured by a far from content cat.Still hopeful though.
Day 3
Grace appear s to have given up 🙁 she stubbornly refuses to take the food out of the maze and sits and looks at it.We have tried to tempt her by placing the tail of her favourite toy mouse into the opening at the top and inviting her to paw it through one of the side vents; no interest.We have placed pieces of dried food along the periphery of each of the openings; no interest.I must say that Grace is not the brightest of cats, but we remain pleased with the product as Grace is most definitely looking trimmer.Let’s hope tomorrow is more positive.
Day 4
Grace is not emaciated yet! but I have to admit that she does not appear to be happy.Both my wife and I have tried the mouse, changed the location of the feeder but unlike the Tom cat on the product picture, Grace has not set foot on the mat yet along put her face or paw into the top.She has tried unsuccessfully to get her mouse’s tail out once now, but her ration stays put.I am fearful that soon the feeder will fill up to overflowing and then Grace might just start to gorge herself.

My wife is going through the training session again and whilst Grace is meowing and looking sad, I think that the sadness is more an animal’s intuition and sensitivity regarding a human losing their mind, rather than hunger.I gather that Grace has removed a number from the absolute top of the feeder this evening and the mood of gloom and despondency is lifted for the time being.We live on in hope.
Day 5 and Day 6
We feel a breakthrough might be coming.Increasingly Grace has become more confident (hungry) and whilst we are pleased that she will swipe a paw at the mouse tail, unless she has dislodged a piece of food through knocking the tower, we are not certain that she has managed to get a single piece out trhough the holes otherwise.We are feeding her small amounts to prevent the RSPCA being called by our 14 year old, who aspires to be a vet, but I fear that soon the White Van with 5 letters emblazoned on the side and a man/woman in uniform will arrive; probably accompanied by a TV crew (which reminds me I need to get a haricut just in case).
Tomorrow will be by last review on this item.I fully expected our cat to have fathomed this contraption out by now and whilst I have no doubt that some owners have trained their more intelligent cats to amuse themselves to feed from this item, i fear that Grace will not master this skill.I am extremely fond of her and would not want her in any way to suffer, so unless it is emptied tomorrow, I fear it will be consigned to the shed.
